Sept. 1, 2010 - Harris, N.Y. - Catskill Regional Medical Center's (CRMC) Grover M. Hermann Hospital in Callicoon, N.Y., announced today that it has created a community walking trail on the hospital's grounds; the trail is open to the public. Grover M. Hermann Hospital Administrator Marc Mendelsohn came up with the idea while looking at Sullivan County health statistics. Mendelsohn said, "I noticed a high rate of cardiovascular disease in Sullivan County, and thought that creating a trail on our scenic grounds would encourage healthy living and promote cardiovascular fitness within our community." Mendelsohn reached out to the Delaware Valley Job Corps for assistance with the project. Instructor Mike Mahoney and a group of his students, over the course of a week, cleared the land and laid down mulch. Mahoney said, "It was a great learning experience for the students, and they had a lot of fun completing the project. We were able to transform the land into something nice and functional for the community." The end result is a wooded trail that is just less than one mile long with potential river views. The trail is open from dawn to dusk during spring, summer and fall, and begins at the side parking lot of the Grover M. Hermann Hospital and loops around to the back parking lot. Registration is not required. To find out more information about the walking trail, including its specific beginning and end points, ask the reception desk. It is always recommended to walk with a partner.

The group sessions, to be held quarterly, will offer advice, encouragement and education to osteoporosis patients. The first session will be on Wednesday, May 26 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the CRMC Women's Health Center at 60 Jefferson Street, Suite 1, Monticello, N.Y.
Osteoporosis causes bones to become thin, weak and break easily. Called the "silent disease," osteoporosis affects people of all ages and is difficult to diagnose.
CRMC's osteoporosis support group will provide patients with the latest information about the disease and provide a unique forum for patients to discuss strategies to manage osteoporosis. The support group will complement the wide range of services that CRMC offers Sullivan County and its surrounding communities.
Diane Primevera, FNP will lead the support group. She has been with CRMC since 1977 and is a highly experienced nurse practitioner at the Women's Health Center, specializing in primary care and women's health.
No registration is necessary. For more information, please call the Women's Health Center at 845-794-7897.
May 4, 2010 - Harris, N.Y. - Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC) is proud to announce the installation of a new Computed Tomography (CT) system at its main campus in Harris, NY. The LightSpeed® VCT 64 configured system from GE Healthcare gives Sullivan County patients access to one of the most technologically advanced diagnostic tools available.
The state-of-the-art 64-slice CT system delivers high quality images of the brain, heart, muscular-skeletal system, spine and vascular system. Additionally, the new system provides high resolution 3-D angiography, enabling radiologists to image various organs and vascular problems using only an IV injection, avoiding more invasive procedures. This advanced CT technology incorporates improved resolution and lowers the radiation dose by 30 to 40 percent compared to conventional CT systems.
"The addition of our new 64-slice CT system complements and extends the wide-range of quality diagnostic services that CRMC offers Sullivan County and its surrounding communities," said Steven Ruwoldt, CEO of Catskill Regional Medical Center. "It provides us with vastly improved image quality and imaging speed, and enhances our overall diagnostic confidence. Low radiation exposure is very important to patients, and our new system offers the lowest dose administered in the Catskill and lower Hudson Valley regions."
CT exams are used when people are ill or injured, or when a physician suspects a medical problem that is not easily detected from a conventional physical examination. The new CT system non-invasively assists physicians in the diagnosis of a variety of anatomical areas.
For more information about imaging services at CRMC, visit www.crmcny.org or call 845-794-3300 ext. 2225 or 2256.

Hermann Hospital in Callicoon, N.Y., recently received two awards from the federal Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA). The awards recognize CRMC for its participation in the HRSA Rural Quality Program in 2009.
The purpose of HRSA's Rural Quality Program is to improve patient care and chronic disease outcomes for diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease by assisting rural primary care providers with the implementation of quality improvement strategies. Out of 55 Rural Quality Program projects running nationally in 2009, only 10 received awards. CRMC's Grover M. Hermann Hospital was the only facility nationally to win two awards.
Grover M. Hermann Hospital was recognized for 'Greatest Leadership Involvement' for project leadership and 'High Data Performer/Greatest Improvement' in the reduction of cholesterol low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels in the community. The core project team consisted of Marc Mendelsohn, AVP, Corporate Compliance and Chief Administrator of Grover M. Hermann Hospital; Dr. Ethan Singer; Joni Johannes, RN, and Alison Mastandrea, RN, as well as the support of several western Sullivan County physicians.
Steve Ruwoldt, CEO of Catskill Regional Medical Center, commented, "These awards validate our success in advancing patient care, and are a testament to the dedication and expertise of our staff in Callicoon. Improving patient outcomes for diabetes and cardiovascular disease addresses an important healthcare concern in western Sullivan County and surrounding communities in Pennsylvania."
Sullivan County Community College (SUNY Sullivan) is pleased to announce that Joan Farrow, long-time college supporter and member of its board of trustees, was recognized with the Marvin A. Rapp Award for Distinguished Trustee Service from the New York Community College Trustees (NYCCT) of the State University of New York, Inc.
In addition, Harris-based Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC) received the NYCCT Business/Industry Partnership Award on behalf of the organization's collaboration with the college.
The NYCCT Marvin A. Rapp Award signifies dedicated and effective service as a trustee over an extended period of time. Farrow, a resident of Monticello, was first appointed to the college's board of trustees in 1996 and has continued to serve as a tireless proponent of and major contributor to the college for the past 14 years. In addition to her service to SUNY Sullivan, Farrow is a long-standing member of the CRMC Board of Trustees and serves as chairwoman of its foundation.
The Business/Industry Partnership Award is the highest award the NYCCT can bestow on an organization for its commitment to its local community college. Only one award is presented in this category each year. CRMC's partnership with SUNY Sullivan is a true win-win relationship as the medical center is given access to skilled graduates while the college obtains the resources needed to offer a state-of-the-art clinical education in critical healthcare occupations.
"We are very fortunate to have such dedicated advocates and partners in Joan Farrow and Catskill Regional Medical Center," SUNY Sullivan President Dr. M. Howard-Golladay said. "We appreciate their ongoing commitment to the college and the important role it plays in our local community."

The program has transitioned from Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley to Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC) as its lead agency, and has moved its offices to dedicated space on the 4th floor of CRMC's main Harris Campus. CRMC will assume oversight and fiscal responsibility of the RISE program and will conduct grant writing on RISE's behalf.
Cindy Zingher, Program Manager of RISE, said, "We are so excited to be part of the CRMC family. Plain and simple, we belong here. With the portals of access available to us, it is a perfect fit. Often, one of our first actions of support is to accompany a victim to the hospital, so our new location here is extremely convenient for all involved. With CRMC's reach, we will now be able to offer our services to Western Sullivan County, and we will have office hours one to two days per week in the Physician Office Suite at the Grover M. Hermann hospital in Callicoon, NY."
Steven Ruwoldt, CEO of CRMC, added, "RISE is such an important program for Sullivan County. Not only does RISE provide assistance to victims of sexual abuse, but the program also provides prevention education. CRMC is committed to advancing services to the community, and this is an excellent opportunity to ensure that RISE continues its invaluable program to the residents of Sullivan County."

February 1, 2010 - Harris, N.Y. - Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC), will continue its ongoing, free monthly lecture series at the Grover M. Hermann Hospital in Callicoon, N.Y.
On Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1:30 p.m., Dr. Paul Salzberg will present a lecture entitled "The Highs and Lows of Blood Pressure" at the Grover M. Herman Hospital cafeteria. For more information or to register, please call (845) 887-5530 ext. 2120. The lecture was originally scheduled on Dec. 5 but was canceled due to bad weather.
Dr. Paul Salzberg has been a family practice physician for more than 20 years in western Sullivan County, and has been very instrumental in managing patient care at Grover M. Herman Hospital. He is board certified in both Family Practice and Geriatric Medicine.
The lecture series is funded through a grant from the federal Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA). The grant, which was awarded to the Grover M. Hermann Hospital Division of CRMC earlier this year, supports community outreach programs on chronic disease. Recognizing the importance of proper disease management, the hospital developed this free monthly series to increase the public's awareness and understanding of a variety of chronic diseases, as well as the health care services and support programs available locally.
The purpose of HRSA's Office of Rural Health Policy's Small Health Care Provider Quality Improvement Grant Program (SHCPQI) is to assist rural providers with the implementation of quality improvement strategies, while improving patient care and chronic disease outcomes. Improving the quality of chronic disease management in ambulatory care settings can improve health indicators and decrease emergency room visits and admissions to hospitals.

Sullivan West coach Pat Donovan, who originally came up with the concept, said, "We wanted to hold an event that directly benefited the community and the CRMC Oncology department was an excellent choice. Once we decided where the funds would go, the girls on my team and Tri-Valley's team did all of the work. I am very proud of their effort. It was very successful and we plan on making this an annual event."
Ruwoldt added, "It is great to see local communities coming together to raise funds specifically for the community. We are touched by their donation and the funds will be spent directly on patient care within our Oncology department."
